Pittsburgh Editorial Event Photographer

I’ve been busy with weddings (’tis the season!) but I’ve also had a lot of editorial and event shoots over the past few summer months. As a Pittsburgh editorial event photographer, I get to use my storytelling skills in a different way. One thing that I truly believe is that the stretching that comes along with variety makes me a better photographer overall.

These are just a few photos from assignments but they’ll give you an idea of the range of things that I get to photograph. Enjoy!

Graduation Ceremony

The first set of images are from the graduation ceremony for The Ellis School – a private all-girls K-12 school in Pittsburgh. I was tasked with making a group portrait and photographs of each of the students as they got their diploma. But the client also wanted photos that show the event from a candid, photojournalistic perspective. That’s the fun stuff! The light was very interesting and while I wanted to show the girls sitting on the riser I was intrigued by the shadows of the audience gathered to watch them during the ceremony.

I’m always on the lookout for a different angle. The sunlight cast shadows on the sign behind the graduates. The traditional hats that they wear made for interesting shadows.

As the sun went down this graduate was illuminated while the girls in the front row were in shadow.

After the ceremony graduates gathered in the cafeteria for a reception. Events like this are inflections points and are by definition ripe for emotional reactions.

Guilde Internationale des Fromagers

Another ceremony: This time it was an event in conjunction with the 2018 American Cheese Society conference. I love cheese but I had no idea how serious people were about it. The New World Chapter of the Guilde Internationale des Fromagers inducted new members during an event at Howl at the Moon. The dueling piano bar was transformed into a cheese cellar for the event. As soon as I walked into the door I was hit by the musky, pungent aromas of the array of cheeses set out for the party. It was heavenly!

Every new member was awarded one of these beautiful medals.

They had special robes and hats that looked like wrapped cheese wheels. I loved it!

Don’t let the formal robes fool you, these folks were a lot of fun!

Sporting Event

After eating so much cheese it was time for something with a little more motion: The City of Pittsburgh’s Uphill 5K. The event in the Hill District was part of an event promoting good diet and fitness in the neighborhood. It’s a tough course taking the runners uphill on Centre Ave. from Freedom Corner and back.

The course went past the historic New Granada Theater. Jazz greats like Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, and Cab Calloway performed there.

Community Waterpark

Like many neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, Hazelwood’s community center is a gathering point for residents. While a small community festival was going on kids (and parents) cooled off in the waterpark. This is the sort of thing that I used to photograph on summer weekends when I was a newspaper photojournalist.

I hope you enjoyed this little break from the regularly scheduled wedding and engagement photos. Keep scrolling and you’ll find plenty of those, too. If you’d like to see more commercial and editorial work then look here.
